Today we enjoyed making shakers which were decorated with the prints of African animals. We will be writing instructions about how we made them as our 'Hot Write' later in the week.
Today we joined a live lesson from the team at Paignton Zoo to learn more about some of the animals that are found in Africa. We were great at answering questions / clues or looking at an animal's skull to guess which one we would be learning about and enjoyed learning about the famous, the less well-known, and the weird animals that live in the African savannahs, rainforests and deserts. After enjoying the video lesson, the zoo set us a challenge to design a new enclosure for an African animal. We were sad to learn that some of the animals are becoming endangered in the wild and thought carefully about the things that they need in an enclosure (water, food and shelter) at a zoo to make it as close to their natural habitat as possible and help to protect some of the species. Today in our Class Assembly for World Book Day we watched a video workshop with Tom Fletcher where he explained how he writes and illustrates his story books. We were fascinated and it inspired us to have a go at making our own this afternoon. Here are some photos of our 'there's a ... in your book' inspired pop-up books and our brilliant costumes. Well done on a fantastic first day back Year 1! This afternoon we spent some time exploring the new challenges, role play area and small world area in our classroom. We've had lots of fun today and have loved being back with our friends. Today we had a special delivery! It was a basket of fruit for Year 1 with a note from Handa. We took it in turns to choose a fruit from Handa's basket and pass it around the circle. We came up with some fantastic adjectives for how some of the exotic and interesting fruits felt and tasted. We then used some of the fruits to make a yummy fruit salad. We have been very busy this week making our fantastic reindeer party hats ready for today's Christmas dinner. Today we had a visit from Forky Farm in Moulton. We were very lucky and got to stroke Jack the donkey, Sally the chicken and Forky the sheep. We loved Jack's soft, velvety ears and Forky's fluffy coat. Today we had a great time making Christingle oranges and learning about what each part represents.
Thank you to Beckworth Emporium for kindly donating the oranges to us. Over this half term we have been closely observing our bean plants, watching the stem, leaves and roots appearing and growing and recording our findings in our bean diaries. Lots of our beans have now reached the castle at the top! |
