This afternoon we enjoyed rocket lollies on the field in our Golden Time. Nellie came to visit us too with her special puppy ice cream.
Today we had a special Jewish visitor in our RE lesson. Mrs Elijah came to talk to us all about her religion and their weekly celebration of Shabbat. She showed us lots of different objects that they use in Shabbat and explained the meaning of them. We had to look for the Star of David on all the objects. Mrs Elijah recited some Jewish prayers in the Hebrew language and explained what they meant in English. She also taught us some blessings, we lit candles and even got to taste some special challah bread too. This week we have been practising our sewing skills and designing, making and evaluating our minibeast hand puppets. We had a fantastic day competing in lots of different races and trying our best to earn points for our houses. This week we have been looking at a piece of artwork called Snail by Henri Matisse. We then used his technique which he called 'painting with scissors' to create our own brightly coloured minibeasts. We have finished our fantastic portholes by carefully drawing three animals that live on the Galapagos Islands. We used our knowledge of animals and their habitats to choose one that is found in the sky, one that is found on land and one that is found in the sea. Today we took our butterfly pavilion onto the school field to release our beautiful butterflies into their natural habitat. We loved holding them and giving them one last drink of sweet orange juice before watching them fly away. Today we started to make our portholes inspired by Charles Darwin's ship the HMS Beagle and the landscape and physical features of the Galapagos Islands. We carefully painted the outside of our portholes in silver paint, used sponges to create the effect of the sky and clouds, ripped tissue paper to create the waves of the sea and sandpaper to create the islands. We can't wait to finish them by adding some of the animals that he discovered. This week in Science, we have enjoyed going on nature walks in our school grounds to identify some of the micro-habitats that are found on our school field and playground, the conditions of each micro-habitat and some of the minibeasts that live in each one. We were amazed by the minibeasts that we found when we looked in leaf litter, in the grass, in the mud, under logs, on tree trunks and inside flowers. We found lots of ants, woodlice, worms, spiders and snails and carefully recorded our findings on a tally chart. We have been enjoying observing our caterpillars as they have changed and grown each day since their arrival. This week each of the five caterpillars crawled to the top of the container and turned into chrysalis so it was time to move them into the net and put them into the chrysalis station. Soon they will hatch into beautiful butterflies!
