Today we heard a knock at the door. When Miss Cox went to investigate, there was a basket of fruit for Year 1 with a note from Handa. We took it in turns to choose a fruit from Handa's basket and pass it around the circle. We came up with some fantastic adjectives for how some of the exotic and interesting fruits felt and tasted.
Today we started our learning on instruction writing by completing our 'Cold Write' on how to make pancakes. We worked brilliantly as a class to mix the batter and make a pancake. After we had finished our writing, as a special treat for a fantastic first week back, we got to eat a pancake. We had a choice of toppings - golden syrup, lemon and sugar or chocolate sauce. They were delicious! Today we had a very exciting afternoon - the Digital Leaders from Class 4 came to visit we used the Chrome Books for the first time and worked really hard to start making our class encyclopedia about animals. Well done on a fantastic first day back Year 1! We have enjoyed spending some time exploring the new challenges, role play area and small world area in our classroom. Welcome back to another fun-filled and exciting half term. Our classroom is ready for our new topic which will be 'Amazing Africa'. Today we looked at Wassily Kandinsky's 'Squares with Concentric Circles' artwork and imitated his style using bright colours and watercolour pencils to create our own Valentine's hearts. This week we have been doing great group work to get ready for our discussion to answer the question of 'Should penguins be kept in zoos?'.

This week we have been thinking about arguments for and against the question ‘Should penguins be kept in zoos?’ After watching videos of penguins in zoos being dressed up and used to entertain people in a parade and another video of them in their natural habitat of the Polar Regions, we came up with lots of interesting points to share in our discussions which we drew on our posters. We had a fantastic afternoon learning about how polar animals survive and keep warm in the freezing cold temperatures, icy water and wind using the blubber glove experiment. When we put our hands into the bowl of frozen ice, they quickly got too cold and we had to take them out of the bowl but when we put our hands inside the bag of lard and then into the frozen ice we discovered that we couldn’t feel the cold temperature of the ice. This is because the lard acted like the polar animal’s blubber and kept our hands warm. |
