This week we have been looking at a piece of artwork called Snail by Henri Matisse. We then used his technique which he called 'painting with scissors' to create our own brightly coloured minibeasts.
We went onto the field for our PE lesson today and enjoyed doing funny races outside in the sunshine. We cheered our bubble on and had lots of fun. When we learnt about the Synagogue, we were fascinated by the Torah scroll. Today we looked at a real Torah scroll and learnt more information about it. We found out that it is the Holy Book for Jewish people and that it contains 613 rules that help them to live a good life as a Jew. We then made our own Torah scrolls with rules that keep us safe and happy at school. Bubble 1 thought that Superworm looked a bit lonely on our display on his own so this afternoon we worked really hard to collage minibeasts to keep him company. I wonder if you can spot your minibeast on the photo of our class display. Today we took our butterfly pavilion onto the school field to release our five beautiful butterflies into their natural habitat. We loved giving them one last drink of sweet orange juice before watching them fly away. All five of our caterpillars have now grown into beautiful butterflies. How many can you see in each photograph? Look really carefully - some of the butterflies are camouflaged!
In Art over the past few weeks, Year 1 have been developing their sketching skills. We have explored the shades that different grades of pencils give and also practised some sketching techniques like stippling, scumbling, hatching and cross hatching. Today we used all of our new sketching skills to draw tortoises and add detail to them just like Charles Darwin did when he was in the Galapagos Islands. This afternoon we made wormeries for Superworm. We layered gravel, soil and stones and then found some green leaves to put on the top for our worms to eat. We will be writing instructions on how we made our wormeries later in the week. Year 1 have been working really hard this week to write their amazing newspaper reports about Superworm being stuck to the fence at school. Today we have lots of fun using tea bags to make them look more like a real newspaper so they are ready to be added to our class display. |
