This week in Year 2, we have been taking part in some amazing experiments to celebrate British Science Week.
Today, we explored floating and sinking using an egg, some water and some salt.
First, we placed an egg into a glass of water to see what would happen. We made some EGGcellent predictions! Some of Year 2 thought the egg would sink, some thought it would float in the water.

We found that the egg sank in water! How interesting!
Next we added table salt into the water. We started with a table spoon.
Next we added table salt into the water. We started with a table spoon.
We placed the same egg into the glass, with the same amount of water now with a tablespoon of salt mixed in. We made another prediction and most of use thought the egg would float. We had some amazing ideas, children suggesting the salt might hold the egg up. Some children predicted the egg might sink because the salt would push it down.
The egg sank again, but this time it was slightly slower! As a class of scientists, we decided to add more salt to see what would happen! So we added an extra table spoon and tried again, using the same water, glass and egg.
This time, the class observed the egg float at the top of the water! We discovered that the salt had made the water more dense, holding the egg up above the bottom of the glass. We added even more salt to see what would happen. Lots of the class had spotted a pattern and everyone predicted the egg would float.
After playtime, we came up with some questions we wanted to know the answers to like:
What if we change the salt to squash?
What will happen if we use milk and salt instead of water?
Here are some pictures of the experiments we carried out after thinking of some super questions.

We have had a super start to British Science Week in Year 2 and look forward to carrying out some more interesting experiments!
