We now have four beautiful butterflies and are helping the grown-ups in Year 1 to take care of them by making sure they have fresh fruit and sugary water each day. We are going to keep them in their net for a few more days to enjoy observing them in the classroom before taking them onto the field and releasing them.

Today we started to make our portholes inspired by Charles Darwin's ship the HMS Beagle and the landscape and physical features of the Galapagos Islands. We carefully painted the outside of our portholes in silver paint, used sponges to create the effect of the sky and clouds, ripped tissue paper to create the waves of the sea and sandpaper to create the islands. We can't wait to finish them by adding some of the animals that he discovered. We are really enjoying watching our caterpillars grow and change into beautiful butterflies and are recording our findings and observations on our caterpillar diaries.
Over the past few weeks in Art Year 1 have been working on their sketching techniques and using different sketching pencils. We then used the sketching pencils and sketching techniques that we had learnt to draw our own tortoises like Charles Darwin did. This morning we arrived at school and found that all of the caterpillars have now made their chrysalises. We can’t wait for them to turn into beautiful butterflies.
The Year 1 caterpillars have been very busy overnight. Four of them have now made their chrysalises and the last one is hanging in a 'J' shape ready to make theirs.
This week in Science, we have enjoyed going on a nature walk in our school grounds to identify some of the micro-habitats that are found on our school field and playground, the conditions of each micro-habitat and some of the minibeasts that live in each one. We were amazed by the minibeasts that we found when we looked in leaf litter, in the grass, in the mud, under logs, on tree trunks and inside flowers. We found lots of ants, woodlice, worms, spiders and snails and carefully recorded our findings on a tally chart. Our caterpillars have grown even bigger over the weekend. Some of them have climbed up to the top of the pot and are hanging in a 'J' shape ready to make their chrysallis and turn into a beautiful butterfly.
