Making boats. Floating and sinking.

As part of our Science topic, we talked about what objects float and sink and why. The children made their own boats, choosing their own materials. The boats mostly stayed afloat, some of the children's reactions were fantastic! We worked out that the boats stayed afloat because they were light but as some of the boats got wet, the longer they were in the water, they began to sink. So the next day, some of the children made another boat but this time out of plastic. Some of the children loved the lesson so much, they tested different bath toys at home, seeing which toys stayed afloat and which toys sunk.

Rescuing bears stuck in ice.

First, we talked about how we could rescue the bears out of the ice and predicted what would happen. We suggested putting it on the radiator, smashing the ice, putting it in hot water, put it under the hand drier, put it in the microwave and wrap a blanket round the ice. Then, we discussed the changes that took place as the ice was melting and the similarities and differences between each suggestion made. Finally, we found that smashing the ice was the quickest way of getting the bear out and wrapping the blanket round the ice was the slowest.
